C/Capt. Seth Cornell
Academy Cadet Commander

C/Capt. Cornell is from the Seacoast Composite Squadron, New Hampshire Wing and has been in CAP since 2014. During his six years, he has attended basic Encampment and NCOLS, staffed three wing Academies, staffed one region Academy, and completed over 400 hours of community service. While he originates from New Hampshire, he transferred to a Virginia squadron for over a year while attending college at Liberty University. C/Capt Cornell has continued to show dedication to the CAP program and has learned to adapt to various leading opportunities. At this year’s academy his focus will be on mentoring, guiding, and supporting his staff in their leadership responsibilities while being a strong leadership example to all the students in attendance.

C/Lt. Col. Kira Wood
Academy Executive Officer

C/Lt. Col. Wood is from the Concord Composite Squadron, New Hampshire Wing. She joined CAP in 2013 and she has seven years of staffing experience with this being her third year holding a command staff position. She has attended three National Cadet Special Activities (NCSA) including the STEM Academy in 2016, the Engineering Technologies Academy in 2017, and the National Powered Flight Academy in 2018. Her CAP aerospace interests have translated over to her academic life and her career development. She is currently attending Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona as a freshman studying aerospace engineering. While in college, she has also received a 3-year scholarship with the Air Force ROTC and she plans to contract in summer of 2020. During the week of the summer academy, C/Lt Col Wood will oversee her support staff while providing them with a professional standard.

C/Capt. Ian Powlus
Encampment Commander

C/Capt. Powlus from Green Mountain Composite Squadron, Vermont Wing. C/Capt Powlus has been a member of CAP for six years. He attended his basic encampment at the New Hampshire/Vermont joint Wing Encampment in 2016. He staffed the 2018 Rhode Island Encampment as a Flight Commander and 2019 New Hampshire NCOLS as a Flight Mentor. He has also been admitted to the Civil Engineering Academy at Tyndall Air Force Base this Summer. C/Capt Powlus is finishing his senior year of highschool at Norwich University's Early College Program. He plans to attend Clarkson University this fall studying Civil Engineering with a minor in Chemistry, and will be participating in the Air Force ROTC program. This year, C/Capt. Powlus has encouraged many cadets from Vermont Wing to apply and staff the NH Summer Academy. His role this year is to lead his staff to teach, mentor and lead the Encampment students throughout the week and create a transformative experience.

C/1st Lt. Simon Goryayinov
NCOLS Commander

C/1st Lt. Simon Goryayinov is from the Nashua Composite Squadron, New Hampshire Wing. During his six years in the Civil Air Patrol, he has staffed three NH wing encampments and was selected as the 2019 Summer Academy Honor Officer. Currently, he is the cadet commander of his squadron. C/1st Lt Goryayinov has taken part in the NH/UK exchange where he traveled to England with a group of other cadets for two weeks. Looking forward, C/1st Lt Goryayinov plans on joining an ROTC detachment when he goes to college and then hopes to serve in the US Army. His role as the NCOLS Commander is to oversee the training and mentoring of the students and lead his staff in the molding of CAP’s future leaders.

C/Capt. Michael Bachand
Cadet Training Officer

C/Capt. Bachand has been in CAP since 2015, belonging to the 186th Composite Squadron in the Connecticut Wing. C/Capt. Bachand has attended the NH Wing encampment as a student in 2015, and has served on the staff from 2016 to the present. He has previously served at the region level for the Cadet Advisory Council, and has staffed the NH Wing Academy previously as the Encampment Cadet Commander in 2019. Outside of CAP, he works for the Vermont Air National Guard and attends Northern Vermont University and double majors in Audio Engineering and Criminal Justice. As the Cadet Training Officer, C/Capt. Bachand’s responsibilities will be evaluating the class presentations, giving feedback to the cadet instructors, and ensuring all curriculum is professional and serviceable.

C/SMSgt Henook Cooper
Cadet Adjutant

C/SMSgt Henook Cooper from the Concord Composite Squadron, New Hampshire Wing. C/SMSgt Cooper has been in Civil Air Patrol since 2016. He attended the NH Wing encampment in 2017 and NCOLS in 2018. In 2019, he staffed the Winter NCOLS as a Public Affairs Officer (PAO) and was a flight sergeant during the summer academy. At his home squadron, C/SMSgt Cooper serves as the PAO where he photographs each meeting to share with the public and the wing. He also creates weekly “reCAP” newsletters. Outside of CAP, C/SMSgt Cooper is active as a Fire Explorer which introduces young people to firefighting. At the 2020 Academy, the Adjutant will work closely with the other NCO staff members to provide support. He will also promote discipline throughout each of the three schools within the Academy. ​
